Description
Released to coincide with the annual live event of the same name hosted by Canadian Top 40 radio broadcasters Z103.5, Summer Rush 2010 is a 17-track collection of the biggest floor-fillers of the year. Compiled by the Ontario-based station, one of the leading mainstream outlets for dance music in North America, it includes several artists who performed at Canada's sold-out Wonderland gig, including Jay Sean (the U.S. Lil Wayne-produced "Down") and Basshunter (the Reel 2 Real-sampling "Saturday"), alongside several massive worldwide club smashes and remixes of pop hits. The ubiquitous Lady Gaga kicks off proceedings with her Ace of Base-esque "Alejandro" given a Hi-NRG makeover by Dutch DJ Afrojack's high-pitched synth reworking. Taio Cruz's collaboration with Ludacris, "Break Your Heart," is also subjected to the remix treatment with a dirty electro interpretation by South London duo Wideboys, as is Wynter Gordon's "Dirty Talk" by Laidback Luke, Chris Ramos' "Celebration" by Danny D, and Pete tha Zouk's "I Am Back Again" by Adam K. and Soha. But the album's highlights are provided by the tracks that haven't been tampered with. Meck's "Feels Like a Prayer" is an inspired mash-up of his own hit "Feels Like Home," which itself sampled Felix's "Don't You Want Me" and Madonna's iconic "Like a Prayer"; Benny Benassi's "Spaceship" is a star-studded slice of robotic hip-house featuring Kelis and Black Eyed Peas' apl.de.ap; and Yolanda Be Cool and D. Cup's "We No Speak Americano" is novelty Europop at its most naggingly infectious best. Elsewhere, there's Gallic house (Avicii's "My Feelings for You"), Latin-inspired trance (Inna's "Amazing"), and bleep-laden big beat (Sidney Samson's "Riverside"), all of which ensure that Summer Rush 2010 is one of the more eclectic and carefully assembled commercial party soundtracks of the year. ~ Jon O'Brien
